WHAT IS FLOATING?

Floatation therapy, also known as floating, floatation, sensory deprivation, or R.E.S.T (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) involves lying in a salt-water solution in a spacious tank. They vary in size, but the typical tank is 8′ long and 5′ wide. Air is allowed to freely flow in and out and the door never locks or latches.

It holds roughly 10″ of water, which is saturated with 1000 pounds of Epsom salt. With such a high density of Epsom salt in the water, you won’t be fighting gravity. This creates a solution more buoyant than the Dead Sea allowing you to float on your back about half in and half out of the water. The water is heated to 93.5° F; this is skin-receptor neutral. You lose track of where your body ends and the water begins.

Noise from the outside doesn’t reach you. The tanks are insulated against sound. After you shut the door and turn off the light, you float in total darkness.

No gravity, no touch, no sight, and no sound. Just pure nothing.

During the float ,the outside world is gone and amazing things happen. When you’re not fighting gravity or constantly taking in information your body has a lot of extra resources at its disposal. Your mind is free to mull things over without distraction, your brain pumps out dopamine and endorphins, and your body gets to rest, de-stress, and heal.

Without gravity pushing you down all the time, chronic and acute pain is relieved, and your muscles get to fully rest. Unlike lying on a mattress, lying in water allows blood to flow freely all throughout your body. There’s no need to readjust your position to get comfortable. Research shows that about 40 minutes into your float your brain stops producing its normal Alpha and Beta waves and starts going deeper into a Theta and even Delta state.
